The Hotchkiss School Virtual Parent Presentation
As young people navigate a constantly changing educational environment, we know one thing is certain: no matter how much technology advances and impacts education, maintaining strong relationships and developing adaptive social skills are critical to students’ well-being and capacity to thrive academically and in their future professions. These skills are not “soft skills.” They are essential for young people to best engage in their education and support their emotional and mental health.
For young people at highly competitive boarding schools, parents are an essential part of a student’s support system even if they aren’t in close physical proximity. Parents can be the first people students share their frustrations with. But how do parents know when to be a sounding board and when to offer advice or become more actively involved? How can parents offer the right support when they are often not around? At the same, many young people today feel that the world is so different now that it is increasingly difficult for older people to relate to their experiences and challenges. It is easy for parents to feel that their well-meaning attempts to understand their world or be helpful are rebuffed.
Combining the most current brain and behavioral research with over twenty-five years of experience, Rosalind will answer these questions, uniquely focused on the boarding school environment.

Without realizing it, we may find it hard to advocate for ourselves, communicate assertively, or face difficult conversations for fear of seeming uncooperative or mean. Until we confront this conditioning, we risk undermining our own success and ability to uplift one another. By better understanding this conditioning as well as emotional regulation, emotional hijacking, and the role of boundaries—we can break these patterns and unlock our full potential as leaders. How do we leave Mean Girls behind us?
While there is so much intention and effort to empower women in the workplace, we are missing an essential understanding of the challenges women still face: moving beyond the social conditioning we thought we left behind in our adolescence.
Without realizing why, we struggle to advocate for ourselves or communicate assertively; we avoid necessary but difficult conversations because we fear coming across as mean and uncooperative. Until we acknowledge this deep rooted social conditioning, we will sabotage our best efforts to empower, mentor, and support each other. Work doesn’t have to be like middle school. We can change our patterns. We can increase our capacity and potential individually and in our professional partnerships.

Many young people feel that the world is so different now that it is impossible for adults to relate to their experiences and challenges. At the same time, many adults feel that it is increasingly difficult and frustrating to reach young people. We want to do our best by them, we believe we do our best for them, but our attempts to understand their world are rebuffed and communicating with them can escalate into misunderstandings and disconnection.
We have to figure out another way to be in relationship with each other. For our children, for their education, for the foundation of our communities and our collective welfare, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Combining the latest adolescent brain and behavioral research with over twenty-five years of work with young people, Rosalind will answer these questions. She will show how to get beyond the stereotypes and expectations young people and adults have of each other and transform our interactions into meaningful exchanges where adults are credible, powerful mentors.
Independent Educational Consultants Association Fall Conference - Tampa, FL
Rosalind Wiseman and Shanterra McBride, authors of Courageous Discomfort, will present the keynote speech and facilitate a workshop on Courageous Discomfort: Having Brave, Positive Life-Changing Conversations at the IECA Fall Conference in Tampa, FL.
As people in the profession of helping young people and their families decide on their next steps in higher education, our everyday experience is facilitating conversations between people who often see the world very differently. When we combine that dynamic with conversations around diversity and inclusion, things can get even more complex.
Based on their latest book, Courageous Discomfort, Rosalind Wiseman and Shanterra McBride give the answers to handling these complex dynamics. Courageous Discomfort acknowledges the challenges of breaking through our hesitancy, frustration, and fear around issues of diversity and inclusion by grounding our thinking and actions in dignity—the belief that everyone has the right to be recognized for their inherent worth. It is only from this foundation that we can transform our work and family relationships with the skills to be effective advocates and allies for building diverse communities where all feel welcome.

What truly motivates young people, and what makes them turn away from us? Combining the latest understanding of adolescent development, Rosalind will show participants how to identify assumptions that can lead to miscommunications between young people and adults, including those that often contribute to the pitfalls of many SEL programs. From there, she’ll show how to transform these miscommunication moments so that we can have more positive interactions with young people, and share what young people really want from SEL programs to keep them credible and relevant.
