Queen Bees & Wannabes: Navigating the New Realities of Girl World and Boy World
(For parents and educators)
When first published, Rosalind Wiseman’s New York Times best-selling book Queen Bees and Wannabes launched readers head-first into a world where teens face the everyday trials of cliques, frenemies, reputations, gossip, rebellion, bullying, crushes, and relationships. While these issues continue to play out among young people, recent advancements in technology and media have – for better or worse – profoundly altered the speed and ways in which boys and girls communicate. Humiliating photographs can spread around an entire school as fast as the click of a mouse; private conversations become public information when posted to Facebook; and kids are fed media messages everywhere from their cell phone texts to video games to YouTube. In this seminar, Wiseman guides you through the transformations in the adolescent landscape over the past several years, outlined in the revised and updated edition of her groundbreaking book. Participants will learn concrete strategies for helping children navigate conflict ethically and with social competence.

Culture Crashing: How Media Influence the Culture of Girl World and Boy World
(For Students)
Every day kids and teens are bombarded with expectations from their parents, their peers, and the media telling them what they need to look, act, and be like. At times confining and conflicting, these rules make it difficult for kids to develop a strong sense of self and ethical foundation. In this groundbreaking multimedia presentation, author and educator Rosalind Wiseman asks kids to think critically about the world that’s being presented to them by dissecting popular music and videos. By examining the impact these messages have on the culture of “Boy World” and “Girl World,” Wiseman helps young people take control of their own decisions.
Owning Up: Creating a Culture of Dignity in your School and Classroom
(For educators*)
Rosalind Wiseman presents a general overview of the philosophy and practices of her Owning Up™ Curriculum and her book – the New York Times best-seller Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends & Other Realities of Adolescence. Wiseman draws from real-life scenarios to demonstrate how cliques, bullying and social hierarchies among children and adults can be placed in a larger context of social justice. In this interactive presentation, educators will learn concrete strategies for responding effectively to perpetrators, targets, and bystanders of kids’ social conflicts, and how to apply them to their individual teaching experiences. Wiseman empowers teachers and other professionals who work with youth to create a climate of safety, respect, and dignity so every participant leaves with positive ways to impact their community.
*Please note that this presentation is not the full Owning Up Training and that educators do not become certified upon completion of the presentation.
Surviving the Hive: Improving Relations with the Adults in Your Child’s Life (For Parents and Educators)
Young people aren’t the only ones who experience bullying, cliques, and social isolation. Often without realizing it, adults can act out similar dynamics. When it happens, adults are not role modeling the behavior children need so that they can, in turn, be ethical, critically thinking individuals. In addition, among parents the hidden world of parental social competition can impact the well-being of children. Drawing from her book Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads: Dealing with the Parents, Teachers, Counselors and Coaches That Can Make or Break Your Child’s Future, Wiseman shows how the strict social rules of Girl World dissected in Queen Bees & Wannabes are equally present in with adults and Perfect Parent World. This interactive multi-media presentation shows parents, youth educators, and administrators how to be effectively involved in a child’s conflict. Parents and educators alike will learn concrete strategies to improve their relationships with everyone in the lives of the children they work with–from their own kids to their teachers, coaches, and principals.
You’re Not in it Alone: Being An Effective Bridge to Teachers and Administrators
(For Counselors)
Most schools have bullying policies and protocols that stipulate children should report bullying and other disciplinary incidents to their teachers. But often, teachers have not be taught how to address these problems, or don’t have the time and flexibility in their schedules to deal with them effectively. In this seminar, Rosalind Wiseman author of New York Times bestseller Queen Bees and Wannabes, shows counselors how to encourage teachers to reach out to them with problems in the classroom. Drawing from her Owning Up Curriculum, Wiseman offers concrete strategies for creating a coalition of faculty to handle students’ conflicts, address their needs, and create an environment of dignity in your school.
