FAQs

Who should attend the Owning Up™ Training Institute?

The conference is limited to those who work directly with kids in some capacity, including: teachers, administrators, counselors, coaches, religious leaders, and community group leaders. If you’re not sure whether you qualify, just call us and ask.

I’m an elementary school teacher. Can I attend the Owning Up™ Training Institute?

Yes! While the Owning Up™ Curriculum is geared toward the middle and high school levels, some of the concepts would be appropriate to discuss with elementary school children depending on their maturity level. Elementary school teachers and counselors often attend the Owning Up™ Training Institute to gain a better understanding of the curriculum, and help them adapt the program for their schools.

I’m a parent. Can I attend the Owning Up™ Training Institute?

Generally speaking, parents should not attend the Owning Up™ Training Institute. The conference is designed to certify educators to teach and implement the curriculum in their schools or organizations. However, if you are a parent with a close working relationship with a school or youth group that will help you to establish a program, you may apply.

Can children or students attend the conference?

No, the conference is for adults only. Before implementing any wide-reaching program in your school or organization, however, we encourage you to get buy-in, feedback, and support from all members of the community, include the youths you work with.

Are transportation/hotel costs included in the price of the training?

No, transportation and lodging are not covered in the $725 training fee. Participants must arrange for their own travel and accommodations. However, we usually arrange for a discounted group rate at a partner hotel for Owning Up™ participants.

Are meals provided at the training?

Yes. Your training fee includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and refreshments on both days of the training.

Do you offer any discounts?

We offer discounts for groups of 3 or more on a graduated scale. Discounts are also available to those who have already purchased the Owning Up™ Curriculum. Call our office for further details: 202-545-0633.

Do you offer CEUs for attending the conference?

As of May 2009, Owning Up Training Institute has been approved by the National Board of Certified Counselors. Because the requirements for securing other types of CEUs vary state to state, we are unable to facilitate that process at this time. However, we will do anything we can to help you make that process easier, such as writing a letter on your behalf or submitting copies of the agenda. We hope to be able to offer a broader range of CEUs in the future.

How do I register for the training?

You can apply online by visiting the Apply Now page of our Web site.

You can also download our application form and submit it via fax or postal mail.

You must submit a $100 deposit at the time of registration to secure your spot in the training.

Visit the Registration Information page for further details.

What happens if I leave the training early?

The training runs from 9am – 5pm on BOTH days of the conference. Participants who miss more than 1 hour of the training may not become certified to teach the Owning Up™ Curriculum.

Do I need to bring anything to the training?

Just yourself and an open mind.

What is the dress code for the conference?

Dress is professional but casual. (A step down from business casual but nicer than what you’d wear around the house on the weekends.) Sneakers and flip-flops in good condition are okay. It is sometimes chilly in the conference center, so be sure to bring layers.

What’s the weather like in DC?

DC is very hot and humid in the summer, and cold in the winter; spring and fall can fluctuate. Check the weather before you come!
