Rosalind’s Pick: If I Stay

Book: If I Stay by Gayle Forman

I just read this book and had to share with you all.

If I Stay (Dutton, 2009) by Gayle Forman is a beautifully written, heart wrenching young adult novel about a seventeen-year-old girl who faces an incredibly difficult choice after experiencing a family tragedy.

In particular, I think this would be a great book to discuss between teens and parents about how we are so intricately connected to the people who are closest to us. But bring tissue! I gave to it my husband to read on a plane and he was a mess.

I have actually read this book too, and I must admit I went through almost half a box of tissues. A book I’d recommend is My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. It’s a story told through the eyes of everyone involved, what happens is there is this 13 year old girl, Anna, who was created as an exact DNA match for her older sister Kate who has leukaemia. Anna sues her parents for the rights to her own body as she doesn’t want to give away one of her kidneys to Kate, even though she knows that if she doesn’t, Kate will die. It’s a great story that shows how we can love someone so much but not be willing to go out of our way to help them, and the consequences. As with If I Stay, its a very sad book and tissues are recommended.

I think that you should read/ books I thought were really good:
(All of these books are YA books, because I’m a young adult… so you might not like them as much as I did.)
    - A Mango-Shaped Space–by Wendy Mass
    - The Bermudez Triangle–by Maureen Johnson (and all of her other books)
    - Three Sisters and Their Brother–by Theresa Rebeck
    - Th1rteen R3asons Why–by Jay Asher
    - Hate List–by Jennifer Brown (I haven’t finished this book yet, but it’s good so far)
    - The Hunger Games–by Suzanne Collins (can’t wait for the 3rd book!!)
    - Gone–by Michael Grant (and the other books in the series)
    - Surviving Antarctica: Reality TV 2083–by Andrea White
    - Everlost–by Neal Shusterman (and the rest of the Skinjacker trilogy)
    - Wild Roses–by Deb Caletti
    - The Fortunes of Indigo Skye–by Deb Caletti (& the Nature of Jade)
and I can’t wait for “By the Time You Read This I’ll Be Dead” by Julie Anne Peters

I love reading! so for your “what girls would say they need the most” I would have books at the top of my list.
